Traditional Basket Weaving Workshop

Traditional Basket Weaving Workshop

The art of weaving is one of the oldest practices in Puglia, weaving flexible branches and wild herbs to create light, resistant and long-lasting containers. Over time, man has learned about the plants of his habitat, also refining the techniques to weave them. In fact, each area can now boast its own characteristic basket, as an example is the one common in the Apulian territory known as panepid, used in the countryside during the hand picking of olives. Lentisk, myrtle, olive, badger, tree, prunus and cane are just some of the plants that can be used to create combinations.  Unexpected materials and colors that nature offers to us every year.

Traditional Basket Weaving Workshop

Making basket by hand. Why ?

  • Because learning how to make an object by hand means to resume a deep bond with nature, with our ancestors and traditions.
  • Because the baskets that are found in stores today are unable to tell almost anything about their history, the hands that made them, the materials they are made of, let alone the places from which they come.
  • Because the hand-woven object made of natural materials lasts over fifty years (despite the plastic one) and will go away without causing pollution.
  • Because the fact of creating an object without buying anything, not even the material to make it, is almost unbelievable!
