Matera Sassi and Bread Experience

Matera, Sassi and Bread Experience

Full Day  Guided Tour

It’s hard to believe, but during the 1940s Matera was considered as a poor town. The so called “Shame of Italy” was included among the UNESCO sites in the 1990s, and since then a real rebirth took place up to 2019, when the city was eventually declared “European Capital of Culture”.

The old town boasts three main districts: the Civita, located on top of a hill and dominated by the 13th Century’s Cathedral, and the two Sassi Districts, whose dwellings and churches were carved out of the soft rock of the ravine surrounding the city.

Visiting Matera is not only a classical tour through its main monuments: it’s exploring its stunning landscapes, learning about the excavation techniques of its inhabitants, as well as about life in its cave-dwellings and rock churches.

Our stroll ends in a traditional Bakery, for a funny Bread Making experience followed by a Tasting of local flavours.
